Negative Content and Fake News Increasingly Widespread, Students Are Asked to Participate in Monitoring and Criticizing News Reports

Student Executive Board of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (BEM FMIPA) Syiah Kuala University held a Smartizen Seminar with the theme “Making Indonesia Anti-Hoax “Avoid News Without Facts” at the FMIPA Unsyiah Auditorium, Wednesday (24/4).

The activity, called the Smartizen (Smart Netizen) Seminar, was attended by the Deputy Dean for Student and Alumni Affairs (WD III) FMIPA Unsyiah, Dr. rer. nat Ilham Maulana, S. Si, Head of the E-Government Ecosystem Development Section of the Aceh KOMINFO and Encryption Service, M. Iman Jaya ST, Executive Director of the Aceh Information and Technology Society (MIT), Teuku Farhan, Chair of BEM FMIPA Unsyiah, and students.

Apart from presenting material from speakers, this activity was also interspersed with video screenings of current issues in the form of confessions from suspects who spread hoax news.

Chairman of BEM FMIPA Unsyiah, Wan Ahmad Tohari, in his speech said that by carrying out this activity, the public, especially students, will better understand how to distinguish between news that does not match the facts and true news.

WD III FMIPA Unsyiah, Dr. rer. Nat Ilham Maulana, S. Si, said that apart from providing information about the rise of hoax news, this activity is also expected to be able to protect the public from the influence of fake news.

Head of the E-Government Ecosystem Development Section of the Aceh Communication and Information and Encryption Service, M. Iman Jaya ST, in his material presentation stated that hoax news is very difficult to eradicate and will always exist.

“Negative content is also the same as hoax news, these 2 things are increasing every year. Therefore, the role of students is really needed in reporting various negative content, as well as in increasing the ability to update the information system where “This information system will further optimize reporting and make complaints from readers easier,” he continued.

Executive Director of the Aceh Information and Technology Society (MIT), Teuku Farhan, also added that students should not be critical of news issues, but before sharing them, ask experts first and be more productive in discussing other things such as the halal industry, startups. In accordance with the name of this seminar, Smartizen (Smart Netizen), students must also become intelligent netizens to face this very fast development era, able to be creative and develop knowledge to be applied in the digital-based Halal Industry. The halal industry is currently developing rapidly throughout the world and is very in line with the Aceh ecosystem as the only region that implements Islamic law. It needs to be discussed more by academics.

This activity, chaired by Zhulfian Luthfan, is one of the Work Programs of the Communication and Information Department (KOMINFO) of BEM FMIPA Unsyiah.

The Smartizen Seminar event is part of a series of activities “30 years of FMIPA Unsyiah” which consists of various activities carried out by lecturers and students of FMIPA Unsyiah.
