FMIPA USK Hosts UNESCO Workshop on AI Readiness Assessment in Indonesia

Banda Aceh, July 11, 2024 – The Informatics Department of FMIPA Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK) hosted the UNESCO Consultative Workshop on the Readiness Assessment Methodology for Artificial Intelligence (RAM AI) in Indonesia. This event resulted from the collaboration between UNESCO, KOMINFO, USK, and KORIKA (Collaboration for Industrial Artificial Intelligence Research and Innovation).

In his opening remarks, the Rector of Universitas Syiah Kuala, Prof. Dr. Ir. Marwan, expressed USK’s commitment to being part of technological development in Indonesia. “We are very pleased to host this important event focused on AI ethics and governance, using the readiness assessment methodology developed by UNESCO.” AI has emerged as a leading technology that significantly changes various aspects of life and industry. Its potential to enhance efficiency, innovation, and competitiveness is increasingly recognized worldwide. However, maximizing AI’s potential requires comprehensive readiness in infrastructure, human resources, and implementation strategies, the Rector noted. “The AI Readiness Assessment Methodology is an approach that can help us gauge our preparedness for adopting AI technology,” he concluded.

The Head of the Aceh Communication, Informatics, and Encryption Agency, Mr. Marwan Nusuf, B.HSc M.A, also emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration. “By synergizing the efforts of the government, academia, and the private sector, we can ensure that AI development in Indonesia aligns with ethical principles and social responsibility,” he stated.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Hammam Riza, M.Sc, IPU., President of KORIKA, added that this workshop is a strategic step in preparing Indonesia for AI adoption. “We hope to gather rich insights from various stakeholders to formulate a comprehensive national strategy.” He also welcomed the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) between KORIKA and FMIPA USK and an Implementation Agreement (IA) between KORIKA and the Informatics Department of USK. “We hope this cooperation will strengthen AI research and development in Indonesia,” concluded Prof. Hammam.

Dean of FMIPA USK, Prof. Dr. Taufik Fuadi Abidin, S.Si, M.Tech, who is also an AI expert, stated that the rapid development of artificial intelligence necessitates thorough readiness in various aspects, including human resources (talent). In terms of AI talent preparation, the Informatics Department has been preparing AI talent since 2019 by offering a Master’s Program in Artificial Intelligence. Through the Erasmus Project, in collaboration with European partners and several universities in Asia, the AI Master’s Program was established in 2021. This program has already graduated several individuals with outstanding achievements. In 2024, the Ministry of Communication and Informatics, in collaboration with USK, provided 20 full scholarships for new AI Master’s students who passed the selection process, he revealed.

The workshop featured three main speakers: Mrs. Undral Ganbaatar from UNESCO, who discussed UNESCO’s recommendations on AI Ethics and RAM AI, Mr. Aries Kusdaryono from KOMINFO, who presented on AI Governance Strategy and Implementation in Indonesia, and Mr. Adya Danaditya from KORIKA, who elaborated on RAM application and AI applications in real life. The workshop not only focused on delivering material but also engaged participants in filling out questionnaires and in-depth discussions on Legal, Regulatory, and Socio-Cultural Effects of AI and How AI Adoption and Investment in Education, Research, and Infrastructure. This activity aims to gather qualitative and quantitative data to be used in UNESCO’s AI readiness assessment report for Indonesia.
