BIOFAIR 2024: Raising Global Awareness to Protect the Ozone and Marine Life

BIOFAIR 2024, an esteemed annual event organized by the Biology Student Association of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Syiah Kuala (USK), has returned with a fresh and timely focus on global environmental issues. With the theme “Preserving the Ozone, Protecting Marine Life,” the event not only offers profound educational insights into pressing environmental concerns but also calls upon all stakeholders to take an active role in preserving the planet.

The event was officially opened on Friday, October 11, 2024, at the FMIPA Auditorium with a grand celebration featuring a traditional Acehnese dance, Ranup Lampuan, and a choir performance by the Biology Student Association. The lively yet solemn atmosphere symbolized the harmony between cultural preservation and environmental responsibility. With the presence of distinguished guests and enthusiastic participants, BIOFAIR 2024 kicked off on a positive and inspiring note.

In his opening remarks, Khairul Abdi, Chairperson of BIOFAIR 2024, emphasized the importance of raising global awareness about two interrelated environmental challenges: protecting the ozone layer and conserving marine ecosystems. “The ozone layer plays a crucial role in shielding the earth from harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation. If it gets damaged, increased UV exposure can have significant consequences, particularly for marine ecosystems like plankton, coral reefs, and other marine species that are vital to the food chain. Furthermore, oceans absorb carbon dioxide and help regulate global climate, making it essential to protect both the ozone layer and marine life,” he explained.

BIOFAIR 2024 is not just a ceremonial event but serves as a platform for various educational activities with a direct impact on the environment. One of the highlighted programs is mangrove planting in the coastal areas of Aceh. Prof. Dr. Lenni Fitri, S.Si., M.P., Head of the Biology Department at FMIPA USK, elaborated that this initiative goes beyond symbolism and is a concrete step towards coastal ecosystem preservation. “Mangroves are critical in maintaining the balance of coastal ecosystems by reducing erosion and protecting coastal areas from abrasion. They also provide habitats for many marine species, supporting the food chain in coastal areas,” she remarked.

In addition to mangrove planting, BIOFAIR 2024 also features an environmental talk show and lab tours that aim to broaden participants’ understanding of biology and its role in environmental conservation. According to Prof. Lenni, “BIOFAIR 2024 is an important opportunity to showcase biology, not only at the national level but also in international circles. This is a significant step toward building global awareness about environmental issues.”

The event also received high praise from Dr. Ir. Wira Dharma, S.Si., M.P., M.Si., Vice Dean III of FMIPA, who highlighted the remarkable progress of the Biology Department at USK. He emphasized the growing importance of biology graduates in tackling global challenges in environmental science and biotechnology. “With the increasing popularity of the Biology Department, career opportunities for graduates in fields related to the environment, biotechnology, and related industries are expanding. This is the right moment for students to maximize their potential and make real contributions across various sectors,” he said optimistically.

BIOFAIR 2024 also garnered support from various external parties, including PT Pembangunan Aceh (PEMA), PT Pasha Jaya, CV Saba Cargo, and the Indonesian Conservation and Education Foundation (Yakopi). These collaborations strengthen the event’s mission to promote environmental sustainability. Additionally, the event partnered with the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) and KSR PMI Unit USK, as well as OSGA, to raise public awareness about health and disaster preparedness. This comprehensive approach reflects a deep concern not only for environmental issues but also for humanitarian causes.

The wide array of activities in BIOFAIR 2024 is designed to engage both the academic community and the public in efforts to protect the planet. With its overarching theme and innovative programs, the event is expected to inspire public awareness about the importance of maintaining ecological balance and protecting the ozone layer for the survival of life on Earth.

As BIOFAIR 2024 unfolds, it is hoped that more individuals will be inspired to take an active role in environmental conservation and the advancement of biological sciences, not only as a social responsibility but also to ensure a better future for generations to come.
