USK Statistics Students Win Favorite Award at 37th PIMNAS for Upwelling Prediction Innovation

At the 37th National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS) held at Airlangga University (UNAIR) from October 14-18, 2024, a team from Syiah Kuala University (USK) specializing in the Exact Research category of the Student Creativity Program (PKM-RE) proudly secured the Favorite Award. This achievement highlights the dedication and ability of USK students to develop relevant and impactful research that aligns with technological advancements and community needs.

Led by Muhammad Zia Ulhaq, a student in the Statistics program from the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) USK, the team also included fellow Statistics students Muhammad Farid, T.M. Faiz Nuzula, and Zahra Ifma Aziza, along with Fakhrus Syakir from Electrical Engineering. Under the guidance of the experienced lecturer, Mr. Novy Reandy Sasmita, M.Sc., the team focused on developing machine learning and time series analysis technology with high applicability for monitoring environmental phenomena.

Their research project, titled Integration of Machine Learning and Time Series Analysis for a Rainfall-Based Upwelling Prediction Dashboard at Lake Lut Tawar, garnered attention from judges and fellow participants at PIMNAS 37. By employing a machine learning approach combined with time series analysis, they created a predictive dashboard that provides insights into the upwelling conditions in Lake Lut Tawar—a natural phenomenon affecting the lake’s ecosystem. This dashboard not only offers predictions of upwelling events but also incorporates weather factors, such as rainfall, which significantly influence temperature fluctuations and lake activity.

This predictive dashboard is expected to serve as a valuable tool for researchers, local government authorities, and the public to better understand environmental changes at Lake Lut Tawar and respond appropriately. Their innovation is further strengthened by an academic publication in a leading international journal, adding prestige and credibility to their research while opening doors for future collaborations in environmental and technological studies.

Winning the Favorite Award not only brings pride to USK on a national scale but also demonstrates the capacity of students from different fields at USK to work together and create impactful solutions for society. This achievement aims to inspire other students to innovate continuously and engage in scientific competitions across diverse fields. The team’s success exemplifies the importance of support from faculty and interdisciplinary cooperation as key factors in achieving outstanding results.

It is hoped that this accomplishment will motivate more students to enhance their academic skills and view events like PIMNAS as platforms for self-development, fostering the competitive spirit of Indonesia’s youth in scientific research.
