FMIPA Debate Competition 2025: A Platform to Sharpen Students’ Reasoning and Argumentation Skills

Banda Aceh – The Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) at Universitas Syiah Kuala successfully held the FMIPA Debate Competition 2025 as a platform to develop students’ critical thinking and public speaking skills. The event took place on [event date], held in the Natural Journal Room and the Faculty Senate Room.

The day began at 08.00 AM with participant registration conducted by the student committee, followed by the official opening led by the MC, the singing of the Indonesian national anthem, and a speech by Dr. Ir. Wira Dharma, S.Si., M.Si., M.P., who officially opened the event. In his remarks, he emphasized the importance of debate as a learning medium for students to build character that is critical, communicative, and solution-oriented.

After a group photo session, the debates commenced at 08.55 AM, moderated by a designated debate moderator. The competition was divided into two categories: English-language debates held in the Natural Journal Room and Indonesian-language debates held in the Faculty Senate Room. Each category consisted of several rounds conducted in parallel, following a structured schedule and rules.

Each team had the opportunity to present their arguments and respond to opposing views in a competitive yet respectful and sportsmanlike atmosphere. The debate sessions continued until 12.05 PM, followed by a lunch and break session (ISHOMA) until 2.00 PM.

In the afternoon, the panel of judges calculated scores from all debate rounds to determine the top-performing teams. The announcement of winners took place at 4.00 PM, led by the MC, and the event concluded officially at 4.20 PM.

Through this competition, FMIPA reaffirms its commitment to nurturing students who are not only strong in science and technology but also equipped with soft skills such as critical thinking, collaboration, and effective communication—qualities essential in today’s global era.
