Two students from the Syiah Kuala University (UNSYIAH) team successfully brought Aceh’s name to the English language debate competition throughout Sumatra. The team consisting of Salsabila Mahdi and Nabila Risti Rachmadi succeeded in winning the title at the Sumatra Overland Varsity English Debate (SOVED) event which was held on 11-13 May 2018, at the STBA-PIA Campus, Medan.
Apart from that, UNSYIAH received the best N1 Adjudicator award by Wilsen Yungnata and the best grand final speaker by Salsabila Mahdi.
Salsabila Mahdi is a student from the statistics department (FMIPA), while Nabila Risti Rachmadi comes from the pharmacy department (FMIPA). Apart from that, UNSYIAH also sent another team consisting of Raudhatul Jannah from the law department (FH) and Dini Satrina from the physics department (FMIPA). Meanwhile, Wilsen Yungnata is an N1 Adjudicator who comes from the international accounting department (FEB).
“SOVED is an annual parliamentary debate competition event that uses English as the language of instruction. And thank God, this year we won.” Salsabila Mahdi said
SOVED has been held since 2013 and has been carried out in rotation by various universities throughout Sumatra every year. Based on the results of the 2018 SOVED committee meeting, Sriwijaya University was selected to be the 2019 host.
This year, SOVED was participated by 26 teams from 14 universities throughout Sumatra. This competition consists of 2 stages, namely the equalization stage and the elimination stage. In the equalization stage, each team competes 4 times to collect victory points (vp) and team score. The 12 teams with the highest VP and team score continue to compete in the elimination stage which consists of the pre-semi-final, semi-final and final rounds, the grand final.
“One team from UNSYIAH managed to get through to the elimination stage by being ranked 7th, while the other team fell in the equalization stage with a very slight difference in team score. The UNSYIAH team managed to compete with other teams that entered the pre-semi-final round and semi-finals until entering the grand final round.” Added Nabila Risti
UNSYIAH managed to outperform the other teams competing in the grand final, namely: Sriwijaya University (2nd place), North Sumatra University (3rd place), and Bengkulu University (1st place). This is the first time for UNSYIAH to win this event, let alone winning 3 of the 4 championship categories.
