Mountaineering and Biodiversity Observation at Bukit Goh Leumo by Mapala Barracuda FMIPA Unsyiah

On March 29–30, 2015, the student nature lovers’ organization Mapala Barracuda FMIPA Unsyiah conducted a mountaineering and biodiversity observation expedition to Bukit Goh Leumo, located in Peukan Bada Subdistrict, Aceh Besar Regency. This activity was part of the 2012–2015 management period and was attended by five core members and one junior member of Mapala Barracuda.

Standing at an elevation of approximately 800 meters above sea level, Bukit Goh Leumo offers a diverse ecological landscape suitable for exploration and environmental education. The main objectives of this expedition were to study and document the biodiversity of the area, as well as to introduce the forest environment to the organization’s junior member as part of their early field experience.

During the two-day expedition, participants traversed forest trails, observed a variety of flora and fauna, and recorded ecological findings that could support further environmental awareness initiatives. The expedition emphasized the importance of understanding local biodiversity and highlighted the need to protect such natural habitats from environmental threats.

This activity also served as a valuable learning platform for the junior member, giving them firsthand exposure to outdoor skills, teamwork, and ecological awareness—core values upheld by Mapala Barracuda in every expedition. It reinforced the spirit of exploration and conservation that lies at the heart of the organization’s mission.

Through such initiatives, Mapala Barracuda FMIPA Unsyiah continues to play an active role in promoting environmental stewardship, empowering students to become advocates for nature while nurturing their physical, mental, and ecological growth through real-life field experiences.
